Cockapoo Grooming: A Complete Owner's Guide
Everything Cockapoo owners need to know about grooming — coat care, matting, how often to book, styling options, and keeping that curly coat healthy.
Cockapoos are among the most popular dogs in the country — and one of the most demanding when it comes to grooming. That gorgeous curly, wavy coat is exactly what makes them so appealing, but it also tangles and mats faster than almost any other coat type. Getting their grooming right is essential, not optional.
This complete guide covers everything a Cockapoo owner needs to know: how the coat works, how often to groom, styling options, and how to keep matting at bay between appointments.
Understanding the Cockapoo coat
Cockapoos inherit a mix of the Poodle's curly coat and the Cocker Spaniel's wavier, softer coat — and the exact blend varies from dog to dog. Some have tight curls, others loose waves, and many change texture as they move from their puppy coat to their adult coat at around 8 to 12 months. Whatever the type, the common thread is that the coat grows continuously and does not shed much — meaning loose hair gets trapped in the coat rather than dropping out, which is what causes matting.
How often should a Cockapoo be groomed?
Most Cockapoos need a full professional groom every four to six weeks. Leave it much longer and the coat starts to mat, particularly in the high-friction areas — behind the ears, under the legs, around the collar, and on the bum. A regular Full Groom keeps the coat healthy, comfortable, and looking its best. Our guide on grooming frequency by coat type puts this in context alongside other breeds. The matting problem — and how to prevent it
Matting is the single biggest grooming issue Cockapoo owners face. Because the coat traps rather than sheds loose hair, mats can form within a week or two without brushing — and faster if the coat gets wet on walks. Tight mats close to the skin are uncomfortable, can hide skin problems, and sometimes mean the coat has to be clipped short rather than styled.
The fix is straightforward: brush thoroughly two to three times a week, right down to the skin (not just over the surface), and dry the coat properly after wet walks. Our guide on the hidden health risks of matted fur explains why staying on top of this matters so much.
Cockapoo styling options
The most popular Cockapoo style by far is the teddy bear trim — a soft, rounded, even length all over with a fluffy face and ears. It suits the breed's coat beautifully and is lower-maintenance to keep than longer styles. We cover it in full in our guide on what a teddy bear trim is. Owners who prefer a longer coat can absolutely have one — it just means more frequent brushing and grooming to keep it tangle-free.
Don't forget ears, eyes, and feet
Cockapoos need attention beyond the coat. Their floppy, hairy ears trap moisture and are prone to infection, so regular ear cleaning is important. Hair grows over their eyes and needs tidying so they can see clearly, and the hair between their paw pads should be kept trimmed. All of this is handled as part of a full groom.
