Understanding the Westie coat

West Highland White Terriers have a harsh white topcoat over a soft undercoat. The coat keeps growing and needs regular trimming to stay neat, and white coats show staining around the eyes, mouth and feet. Most pet Westies are clipped short for easy care; a tailored cut keeps a longer skirt and the classic rounded head.

Hair that keeps growing rather than shedding out, so it mats without regular clipping and scissor work. These breeds need a full groom on a strict cycle. That puts Westies on our Signature Full Groom package.

Built for Westies

Best for: Westies on a 6–8 week cycle, with regular brushing of the skirt and legs if kept longer.

Not suited to: Long gaps with a longer skirt. If the skirt has matted, a shorter pet trim is the kinder option.

Westie grooming questions

What is the difference between a pet trim and a tailored cut?

A pet trim clips the coat short all over for easy care and starts at £65, typically around 85 minutes. A tailored cut keeps a longer skirt and shaped head, starts at £80 and typically takes around 105 minutes.

Do you hand strip Westies?

Most pet Westies are clipped. Hand stripping is a specialist technique that is only suitable for some coats, so please ask before booking.
