Understanding the Shih Tzu coat

Shih Tzu hair grows continuously, and the long, fine coat mats quickly behind the ears, in the armpits and down the legs. Hair around the eyes needs regular attention so it does not irritate them. Most pet Shih Tzus are kept in a shorter practical trim with a rounded, tidy face.

Hair that keeps growing rather than shedding out, so it mats without regular clipping and scissor work. These breeds need a full groom on a strict cycle. That puts Shih Tzus on our Signature Full Groom package.

Built for Shih Tzus

Best for: Shih Tzus on a 4–6 week cycle, with brushing at home in between.

Not suited to: Long gaps between grooms. If the coat has matted close to the skin, a shorter trim is the kinder option.

Shih Tzu grooming questions

How often should a Shih Tzu be groomed?

Every 4–6 weeks suits most Shih Tzus. Longer coats may need the shorter end of that cycle, plus daily brushing.

Can you keep the hair out of my Shih Tzu's eyes?

Yes. The face and eye area are tidied at every Full Groom so hair does not sit against the eyes.
