Chow Chow after grooming

Understanding the Chow Chow coat

Chow Chows carry a thick, stand-off topcoat over a very dense, woolly undercoat. Loose undercoat packs in around the ruff, britches and tail, and it holds water, so a quick towel dry leaves the skin damp. The work is a full high-velocity dry and careful de-shedding, not clipping — shaving a Chow's double coat can damage how it grows back.

Two layers — a coarse topcoat over a dense undercoat that blows out twice a year. These coats are never clipped short; they are washed, blown out and de-shedded. That puts Chow Chows on our Signature Bath & Style package.

Built for Chow Chows

Best for: Chow Chows on a 6–8 week cycle. Coat condition and shedding season both affect how much work each visit takes.

Not suited to: Shave-downs. If the undercoat has packed or matted badly, we will talk through the kindest option before starting.

Chow Chow grooming questions

Can you shave my Chow Chow for summer?

We do not shave Chow Chows. The double coat insulates against heat as well as cold, and clipping it short can damage regrowth. A thorough de-shed removes the loose undercoat so air can reach the skin.

Why does a Chow Chow groom take around two hours?

The undercoat is very dense, so washing through to the skin and drying it fully with a high-velocity dryer takes time. Rushing the dry leaves damp coat that can irritate the skin.

How often should a Chow Chow be groomed?

Around every 6–8 weeks suits most Chows, with brushing at home in between. During heavy shedding seasons, sticking to the cycle keeps the workload manageable.
