Understanding the Border Collie coat
Rough-coated Border Collies carry long feathering on the legs, chest, trousers and tail over a dense undercoat, and those feathers are where mats and burrs collect after fields and hedgerows. Smooth-coated Collies still have a full double coat and shed just as heavily. Neither should be clipped down — the coat is tidied and thinned by hand.
Two layers — a coarse topcoat over a dense undercoat that blows out twice a year. These coats are never clipped short; they are washed, blown out and de-shedded. That puts Border Collies on our Signature Bath & Style package.

Best for: Active Collies every 6–8 weeks, especially if they work or walk through fields and woodland.
Not suited to: Clipping the coat short. Collies also do best with calm, unhurried handling — which is exactly what a one-to-one mobile session gives.

Border Collie grooming questions
My Collie is sensitive to noise and handling — will they cope?
Collies are often noise-sensitive, which is exactly why mobile suits them. There are no other dogs, no clipper noise from neighbouring stations and no waiting around. We work at your dog's pace and take breaks whenever they need one.
Should the feathering be cut off?
No — we tidy and thin it rather than remove it. Feathering is part of the breed's coat structure. If it has matted badly we will always show you the options first and take the least drastic route the coat allows.
Do smooth-coated Collies need grooming too?
Yes. Smooth coats are still double coats and shed heavily. They need the same bath, blow-dry and de-shed, just without the feather work.
