Rough-coated Border Collies carry long feathering on the legs, chest, trousers and tail over a dense undercoat, and those feathers are where mats and burrs collect after fields and hedgerows. Smooth-coated Collies still have a full double coat and shed just as heavily. Neither should be clipped down — the coat is tidied and thinned by hand.

No — we tidy and thin it rather than remove it. Feathering is part of the breed's coat structure. If it has matted badly we will always show you the options first and take the least drastic route the coat allows.
Yes. Smooth coats are still double coats and shed heavily. They need the same bath, blow-dry and de-shed, just without the feather work.
