Your puppy's first grooming experience sets the tone for a lifetime of care. A positive introduction means they will grow into an adult dog that is calm, confident, and happy during grooming appointments. A negative one can create lasting anxiety. Here is what to expect and how to prepare.
Most puppies can have their first grooming session from around 12 to 14 weeks of age, once they have had their initial vaccinations. It is important not to wait too long — puppies that are introduced to grooming early adapt much more quickly than those who experience it for the first time as adults.
A first groom is not about achieving a perfect haircut. It is about familiarisation. Your puppy will be gently introduced to the grooming table, the sound of clippers and dryers, the sensation of brushing, and having their paws, face, and ears handled. Everything happens at their own pace, with plenty of reassurance and breaks.
Mobile grooming is particularly well suited to puppies because it removes the stress of travelling to an unfamiliar salon. Your puppy stays close to home, in a quiet one-to-one environment, without the overwhelming noise and activity of a busy grooming parlour. This calm setting helps build positive associations from the very start.
